MOUNTAIN PINE

The mountain pine (Pinus mugo) is related to the alpine stone pine and the scotch pine, but unlike them it is not a tree but a shrub. It forms continuous stands above the upper forest line. Its strong roots retain moisture and protect the soil from erosion and landslides. In the past, it used to be cut down and burned off for the needs of expanding sheperding. Thanks to the planting in recent times in the original places and to its natural ability, it is expanding, thus fulfilling its irreplaceable function.
